Reading is a top priority and favourite activity here at Hindringham. We aim to instil a life-long passion in the children, handing on that great gift which the historian Edward Gibbon described as “my early and invincible love of reading”.
Reading is the key which unlocks everything. We are also acutely aware of the importance of links across different subjects. English and mathematics open the way, enabling the children to engage in and take full advantage of a broad-based curriculum. In the 2010 SATS, a full 100 per cent of our Year 6 pupils achieved level four or above in reading.
Almost the first thing visitors see on arrival is the new library area, extremely popular with the children. We have a Bookswap Box for pupils and their parents to ensure that we can all share our latest favourite read.
“The curriculum is significant in promoting pupils’ enjoyment and interest in learning. Increasingly, links are made across subjects so that pupils are able to practise skills they have learnt in other lessons.” – OFSTED report November 2010.
We have an active after-school Book Club with children contributing to the national Reading Review Group.
The children enjoy meeting popular writers such as Geraldine McCaughrean, award-winning author of almost 150 books, and Caroline Lawrence, creator of The Roman Mysteries, the well-loved books and TV series. This year it was the turn of the celebrated international singer, musician and story-teller, Nick Hennessey, to visit the school and encourage pupils in their own poetry-writing.
We have many budding poets here and for several years have produced prize-winners in the Poetry-next-the-Sea Festival, which brings authors to nearby Wells each year.
This spring, pupils have taken their inspiration from the stream that flows through (and sometimes floods) the heart of Hindringham.

What can you see?
I see fish scales glimmering in the light,
like delicate little diamonds.
I can see daffodils opening,
as the sun comes out.
Water skaters like little floating boats.
What can you feel?
I feel water cress.
I feel tickly fish swimming away,
toads kicking their legs.
I feel insects on my face,
water beetles wading.
What can you hear?
I hear birds singing and tweeting,
ripples gurgling,
little waterfalls trickling.
I hear fish splashing,
trees swinging.
I hear the air whistling.
by Hannah Good (Year 3)
A swirl and a whirl
and a slow moving river
meandering.
Waves and treasures
underneath the bank
A rustling and a washing noise.
Fish scale patterns on the surface.
