Food Glorious Food!

“Pupils ...show a good understanding of how to keep safe and increasingly show their commitment to keeping fit and healthy” - OFSTED report November, 2010.

Twelve noon is an important moment in the day at Hindringham: lunch time. Although we are a small school we are hugely fortunate to have our own kitchen and dining room, enabling the children to enjoy delicious and healthy meals cooked freshly on the premises by our wonderful Mrs Joy Bacon.
Vegetarians are well catered for and overall more than three-quarters of the pupils eat school lunches here.

Three interesting facts reported from the kitchen by Mrs Bacon:

  • The children have traditional tastes. They love their roast meals (beef, pork, chicken or sometimes sausages with Yorkshire pudding). Chicken or vegetable korma is also popular and so is pasta.
  • They love traditional puddings, like crumbles and custard. Their all-time favourite is toffee cream tart – a dish which, mysteriously, contains neither toffee nor cream.
  • Friday is chip day. But chips are not universally popular. Many of the children, aware of the need for healthy eating, prefer to choose a jacket potato.

We believe lunchtime is really important. Our children eat in ‘family groups’ and good table manners are encouraged. Since they are learning the principles of healthy eating, the children are not expected to bring crisps, snacks or sweets into school.

Children in Class One are provided every day with elevenses of fresh fruits and a drink, which they sit down to share together.
